Dangers of Wiper Cleaning Fluid

Wiper cleaning fluids help a lot in maintaining the cleanliness of the windshield especially when the car cannot be cleaned right away. It is also very helpful during winter driving. But there are dangers that are associated with wiper cleaning fluids.

The California Windshield Technicians Association (CWTA) says windshield wiper fluids can be very toxic and should never be left where children can reach it. Among the dangers include renal failure, sudden blindness, and even death. National Windshield Repair Association

The National Capital Poison Control has mentioned in its official website, the dangers that lurk in a bottle of windshield wiper fluid. “Windshield wiper solution typically contains 30-50% methanol. Methanol is a highly toxic alcohol. Very small amounts are poisonous – to children, adults, and pets. Symptoms of poisoning don't happen for a while. Someone could swallow even a fatal amount and feel fine for hours.” Read the continuation here

CWTA President Luke Davidson says windshield wipers get accidentally ingested by children who may be attracted to its blue color – which is often same as sweet beverages or juices. Adults can get poisoned as well for ingesting it, and it usually happens when the fluid is transferred to an empty drink bottle. Small amounts of “extra’ wiper fluid are usually transferred in used bottles to keep an extra for winter-time driving.

in the event that it is accidentally swallowed, the patient should be immediately brought to the nearest hospital. The University of Utah Health and Hospital Website shares what should be done if in case someone accidentally ingests wiper fluid. Power Window          Wiki

“Methanol, as it's broken down in the body, it effects the eyes and it will actually effect the optic nerves and it's not a reversible blindness. It does other things too, and it's the other things that can potentially kill you, and again a good swallow of that is potentially deadly. The good news is, we can treat it, but it's not something we can treat at home we have to do it in a hospital.” Read the rest of the feature here

The CWTA says it may be best to ensure that wiper fluids and similar chemical substances be kept away from children and pets. It should also not be transferred in a container that is improperly labelled. Moreover, the CWTA suggests that if possible, more natural, and chemical-free options may also be explored.
